Ode to Perseverance

by Marcus Goodyear

Everything begins
with a word. The reason
for breath is in our minds
if we create and speak
and think about prophets
around us, inviting us
to sell our bull horns
and find ourselves
and our true form
of light and belief.
Sometimes I pick up
my little dog and hold
her to my chest
and hear her whine
and feel her shiver
because she never
wants to be let go.
Her nose is cold
against my neck.
Because she believes
in me, I can believe too
that I will never let go.
